June Gathering | 24-26 June 2014 | Viterbo University Campus
During the opening of our retreat, we learned about the bold vision and determination of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration for raising up the arts in our community. We were inspired by success stories like those described in the video below - Teaching through the Prism of Arts Education.
|
We chose to adopt the Kennedy Center's definition of arts integration as the foundation of our work.
The focus of our project will be on pre-service teachers (during the four years they are at Viterbo University) and those teachers as they graduate and develop through their first five years as in-service teachers. The total span will thus be nine to ten years. We will work collaboratively and closely with our school district partner and our partner nonprofit organizations to create an environment in which arts-integrated education will thrive. |

Balancing the Inner Heretic with the Inner Mischief Maker: Prototyping the Essentials of This Project
- Collaboration above all. "Win" means we ALL win.
- Pre-service teachers are at the heart of the grant. Will will utilize arts integration to make teachers stay energized and last.
- We can't send pre-service teachers into an unprepared environment.
- Focus on 2-year intervals - a manageable chunk that benefits every partner.
- Recognize and reward achievement to pump us up for this work.
- We need an innovative way to make this a sought-after benefit, not an add-on to existing work. Arts integration must be utilized and seen as a means to the goals, not an extra burden.
- We will learn and practice as a cohort.
What gifts do we each bring to this initiative?
